We would live to invite you to contribute a work of art toward the Weld Echo 2008 exhibition, which will be held from 21st - 31st May in the Long Gallery, Salamanca Arts Centre, Hobart.
Weld Echo will be an exhibition that features both emerging and well established aritsts, and follows on from the highly successful 2005 & 2007 Weld Echo exhibitions which together have involved over 100 artists and thousands of viewers passing through.
The Collective...
Weld Echo is coordinated by the Black Sassy Collective, the artistic arm of the Huon Valley Environment Centre (HVEC). The collective is volunteer run, not-for-profit, community based and focuses on producing art exhibitions that provide local and grassroots artists with the opportunity to gain exposure.
The Weld Valley...
The Weld Echo exhibition aims to create greater awareness of the destruction of the amazing Weld Valley in the Southern Forests, located 50km south west of Hobart. The Weld Valley remains one of the most diverse and least exploited native environments in Southern Tasmania. Its towering forests, deep gorges, mountains, gushing rivers and wide plains represent one of the finest examples of pristine ecology in the state. While the Lower Weld has been consistently recognised as of World Heritage Value, it remains unprotected and open to industrial forestry and mining operations. A community campaign has been highlighting both the beauty and destruction of these forests for over five years.
We are looking for artists of all mediums to contribute to the exhibition; painters, photographers, scultpors, woodworkers, textile artists, film makers, etc. with all the artwork to be themed around the Weld Valley and/or the campaign to protect it. For more information and images visit www.huon.org.
Artist Open Days...
There will be open days held in the Weld Valley for artists who wish to visit to gain inspiration. The open days will be held on the 24th February and the 9th & 23rd March. Meet at the Huon Valley Environment Centre (behind Glo Cafe, Wilmot Rd, Huonville) at 10.30am on the day. Please bring lunch and water for yourself and be prepared for all weather.
