Camp for Climate Action (Australia)

10 Jul 2008 - 9:00am
15 Jul 2008 - 9:00pm

Camp for Climate Action (Australia) is a collaboration between numerous groups and individuals who are opposed to the expansion of the coal industry at a time when immediate action to prevent dangerous climate change is most urgent.

The Camp is inspired by previous similar gatherings held in the UK in 2006 and 2007. It will be a participatory, sustainable space, where people are invited to share, learn and take action. It will be one of a number of climate camps happening in Europe, North America, and Australia.
The Camp for Climate Action will be taking place mid 2008 at an as yet undecided location in the Hunter Valley or Newcastle.
Newcastle is host to the world's biggest coal port. Fed by mines in the Hunter Valley, the port and the mining industry are currently undergoing major expansion supported by Federal and State governments alike.
In the absence of real leadership on climate change, we will gather in Newcastle to demonstrate our support for a move away from the the quarry economy of the coal industry. Just, sustainable solutions exist, and must be taken up now.
We will use non-violent direct action to send our message to governments across Australia and the world. We invite you to join us.
